What You’ll Need: Equipment Guide

Start where you are, equipment or not.

A great deal of classes inside The Yoga Rebel Studio require no equipment at all, so if you’re just getting started - don’t worry - there’s plenty you can do with just your body and a mat.

You’ll find mobility, yoga, and strength classes that use zero props, giving you space to build strength and confidence before adding anything else.

When you’re ready to level up, this page serves as a guide to help you understand what we use in The Yoga Rebel Method: simple, effective tools to support your progress and unlock your full potential.

The Essentials (when you're ready)

🟣 A Selection of Dumbbells

All of our programmes are designed for effective, accessible home training, so when it comes to building strength from home, dumbbells are your primary tool! (Some programmes, like LIFT, also offer gym options if that’s your preference.)

Why? Because different muscles need a different level of challenge. Your glutes and hamstrings can handle more weight than your shoulders and biceps, so a range of dumbbells helps you train safely and effectively.

If you’re short on space or just getting started, adjustable dumbbells are a fantastic option - like this affordable set that can even convert into a barbell or kettlebell. They’re compact, versatile, and a one-time investment in your long-term strength.

🔵 Resistance Bands (Loop Style)

We use these long loop resistance bands for mobility classes, 'Yoga Strong' classes and strength work.

They’re incredibly versatile, travel well, and offer multiple levels of resistance depending on what your body needs that day, or what muscles you are targeting.

🟢 Small Equipment

  • Yoga blocks – for support in yoga poses, improving range of motion in strength exercises, or even used to create a make-shift exercise bench! Check out this video to see that in action!

  • A sturdy chair or bench – helpful for many strength exercises, stretching classes and removing the challenge of balance when it is not our focus!

  • A clear wall space – occasionally used in mobility, strength and stretching classes to support or challenge the body in unique ways.

Other Helpful (but Not Essential) Tools

🔴 Resistance Bands with Handles

For upper body and back training, especially in our LIFT programmes, this kind of band set with handles and a door anchor helps mimic gym-style exercises from home.

They’re easy to use, compact, and a great complement to dumbbells, providing strength training options that loop bands do not.

There are always alternatives offered if you do not have these bands.

🟡 Pull Up Bar

Within the LIFT programmes, you will find some exercises and progressions that work towards being able to do a pull up.

Building the strength required for a pull-up is incredibly valuable. Not only does it develop your upper body and grip strength, but it also supports posture, shoulder health, and overall functional fitness.

There are always alternatives provided for those who do not have a pull up bar.

Why Equipment Matters

We love that yoga is known for being equipment-free - it makes the practice simple and accessible. But this same reason is also why yoga alone isn’t enough for full-body health.

Without equipment, some major areas of the body get neglected, especially the posterior chain (your back, glutes, and hamstrings). In yoga, we never pull or load these muscles in a way that challenges them fully, because we have nothing to pull against.

And without added resistance, our muscles can’t experience progressive overload - the essential ingredient for building strength, enhancing mobility, and improving bone density, which is especially important for women over 30.

This doesn’t mean yoga isn’t valuable - it absolutely is! But if you want to feel strong, resilient, and protect your body for the long term, simple pieces of equipment become tools for health, vitality, and confidence, not clutter.
